GREENSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo came to North Carolina A&T on Wednesday to make a pivotal announcement for the university's effort to aid in the advancement of clean energy and provide jobs in the field.

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $23.7 million American Rescue Plan Good Jobs Challenge grant to NC A&T to create STEPs4GROWTH, a clean energy workforce training program.

The program will benefit several 17 economically distressed counties in North Carolina, including Wilson, Nash, Edgecombe, Northampton and Halifax. The university said the program's goal is placing thousands of workers in the sector over a 5-year span.

“North Carolina is quickly becoming the center of our country’s emerging clean energy economy,” Gov. Cooper said. “This transformative grant will invest in our state's diverse workforce as we continue to create high paying clean energy jobs and bolster NC A&T's reputation as a national leader preparing students for the economy of the future."

The program is aimed toward high school and college students focused on building a career in the energy sector. NC A&T hopes to have the program started by 2026.

Gov. Cooper and Secretary Raimondo toured NC A&T’s electric vehicle and robotics lab and talked with grant partners and clean energy employers on Wednesday.
